Specialized Gynecology Services Q & A
What causes chronic pelvic pain and how is it diagnosed?
Pelvic pain can originate from reproductive organs (ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroids), urinary system (bladder infections, kidney stones), digestive system (bowel disorders, appendicitis), or musculoskeletal issues. We conduct comprehensive evaluations including detailed pain history, physical examination, lab work, and imaging studies to identify the source. Our integrative approach considers all potential causes to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
What is the Acessa procedure and how does it work?
Acessa is a minimally invasive treatment for uterine fibroids that uses radiofrequency energy to shrink or eliminate fibroids without removing the uterus. The procedure involves mapping your uterus to locate all fibroids, then using a laparoscopic tool with ultrasonic guidance to deliver targeted radiofrequency waves directly into each fibroid. This outpatient procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes and allows treatment of multiple fibroids of any size or location while preserving the uterus.
How long is recovery after Acessa fibroid treatment?
Recovery from Acessa is significantly shorter than traditional fibroid surgery. Most patients need 3-5 days off work and experience cramping similar to menstrual cramps for a few days. The procedure requires only two small quarter-inch incisions that are usually closed with skin glue rather than stitches. Full recovery, including return to exercise and sexual activity, typically takes 1-2 weeks compared to 6-8 weeks for traditional surgery.
What is endometrial ablation and who is a candidate?
Endometrial ablation destroys the uterine lining to treat heavy menstrual bleeding when caused by benign conditions. Candidates must have completed childbearing since the procedure can cause sterility. Before the procedure, we perform endometrial biopsy to rule out cancer and imaging to check for polyps or fibroids. The procedure often significantly reduces or eliminates periods, providing relief from heavy bleeding.
What conditions require specialized gynecological surgery?
We perform minimally invasive surgery for conditions including large or symptomatic fibroids, severe endometriosis, ovarian cysts, abnormal uterine bleeding unresponsive to medical treatment, and chronic pelvic pain. We also offer cosmetic and functional procedures like labiaplasty for patients experiencing discomfort or self-consciousness about labial appearance or size.
Is labiaplasty only for cosmetic reasons?
While some patients seek labiaplasty for cosmetic concerns, many have functional issues including discomfort during exercise, pain with tight clothing, irritation during sexual activity, or hygiene difficulties. The procedure can reshape either the inner (labia minora) or outer (labia majora) vaginal lips to improve both comfort and appearance. Recovery typically takes 2-4 weeks with return to normal activities.
Can Essure coils be safely removed if causing problems
Yes, Essure coils can be removed through minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. The procedure takes less than an hour under general anesthesia and involves small abdominal incisions to access and remove the coils from the fallopian tubes. Recovery is similar to other laparoscopic procedures, with most patients returning to normal activities within 1-2 weeks. However, fertility may be compromised after removal.
How do you treat endometriosis comprehensively?
Our endometriosis treatment addresses both symptoms and underlying inflammation through a combination of approaches. Treatment may include hormonal therapy to suppress endometrial growth, anti-inflammatory protocols, nutritional support, pain management strategies, and minimally invasive surgery when necessary. We focus on preserving fertility while effectively managing pain and improving quality of life.
