Sexual Health, STI Testing & Annual Exams Q & A

How often should I have STI testing?

STI testing frequency depends on your sexual activity and risk factors. Sexually active women should have annual testing at minimum, with more frequent testing (every 3-6 months) if you have multiple partners, new partners, or engage in higher-risk activities. We provide personalized recommendations based on your individual situation.

What STIs are included in comprehensive testing?

Our comprehensive STI panel includes testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B, herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2), and trichomonas. We also offer HPV testing as part of cervical cancer screening and can test for additional infections based on risk factors and symptoms.

What should I expect during my annual gynecological exam?

Your annual exam includes a review of your medical and sexual history, breast examination, pelvic examination, Pap smear (as needed), STI testing, and discussion of contraceptive options. We also address any concerns about sexual health, menstrual irregularities, or other gynecological issues.

Can sexual dysfunction be treated effectively?

Yes, many causes of sexual dysfunction are treatable. We evaluate hormonal factors, physical causes, psychological factors, and relationship issues that may contribute to sexual problems. Treatment options include hormone optimization, vaginal treatments, counseling referrals, and addressing underlying medical conditions.

What causes painful intercourse and how is it treated?

Painful intercourse (dyspareunia) can result from hormonal changes, vaginal dryness, infections, endometriosis, or other conditions. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include hormone therapy, vaginal moisturizers or lubricants, treatment of infections, or addressing structural issues.

How often do I need a Pap smear?

Current guidelines recommend Pap smears every 3 years for women ages 21-65, or every 5 years when combined with HPV testing for women 30-65. However, some women may need more frequent screening based on previous abnormal results or risk factors.

Is it normal for sexual desire to change with age?

Yes, sexual desire naturally fluctuates throughout life due to hormonal changes, stress, health conditions, medications, and relationship factors. Significant decreases in libido, especially after menopause, can often be improved through hormone optimization and addressing contributing factors.

What should I do if I think I've been exposed to an STI?

Contact us promptly for testing and evaluation. Many STIs can be asymptomatic, so testing is important even without symptoms. Early detection and treatment prevent complications and reduce transmission risk. We provide confidential, non-judgmental care and partner notification assistance when appropriate.
